XIII Conference of UNCTAD
18 April 2012
This week marks its XIII Conference whose central theme is 'Development-centred globalization: Towards inclusive and sustainable growth and development', and with the participation of several international actors (states, international organizations, civil society, etc.). This year's edition is marked by the controversy surrounding the release of a letter signed by former UNCTAD's workers in which they denounce the strategy that OECD countries are pursuing to weaken this institution. Here you can see the letter and a related new.
Parallel to UNCTAD's Conference, who has denounced the reigning economic orthodoxy and the link between finances and economy, it is held in Washington a new Spring Meetings of the Bretton Woods Institutions, also surrounded by controversy due to the choice of the new World Bank president. This privilege rests with the United States who, contrary to the majority of voices of civil society and other stakeholders, has appointed as President Jim Yong Kim.
All the above is an example of the need for reform of international institutions to achieve an effective and democratic global governance, and not governed solely by the interests of the North as the UBUNTU Forum has been calling for years.
