A Financial Transactions Tax in the European Union... for development?

After months of negotiations and different voting within the European Union (EU), this morning the European Union's Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) has approved the introduction of a Financial Transaction Tax (FTT) through enhanced cooperation. Algirdas Semeta, the EU Commissioner responsible for Taxation recognized the agreement as 'a major milestone in global tax history'. Read more... |

14 December 2012 - The European Parliament Plenary has given green light (533 votes in favour, 91 against and 32 abstentions) to 11 EU countries to move forward in the Enhaced Cooperation Procedure relative to the Financial Transaction Tax. These 11 countries are Germany, France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Slovenia, Austria, Slovakia and Estonia. Now the process moves to the Council, where it has to be approved by qualified majority. There is, still, a way to be walked. Here you can check the approved text at the EP.

HP+10: Future of global governance

Last February, the 10 years' meeting of the Helsinki Process on Globalisation and Democray, a multistakeholder forum promoted by the governments of Finland and Tanzania to promote better ways to manage globalisation, took place in the Hansaari Conference Centre, in Finland. The UBUNTU Forum has participated in this process for many years and his director, Manuel Manonelles, also participated in the last February meeting, whose final report, entitled 'Future of global governance', is now published. Information note: The process of implementation of a tax on financial transaction has begun

| Yesterday, 9th October, the ECOFIN meeting in Luxemburg endorsed the engagement of eleven states members of the EU to implement a tax on financial transactions through the Procedure of Reinforced Cooperation. Despite difficulties met, finally, Austria, Belgium, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain are committed in ratifying the agreement. Read more... |

Project for a Universal Declaration of Democracy

The promotion of democracy at all levels is one of the great challenges of our society. The context we live in is, undoubtedly, a clear sign of democratic deficit of control and participation and, facing doubts and uncertainty of many, the answer to this situation should be more and better democracy.
In this sense, over sixty years after the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, professors Federico Mayor and Karel Vasak promote a Project of Universal Declaration of Democracy, which has just been presented in the World Forum for Democracy organized by the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. In Search of New Development Finance

The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs has launched its 2012 World Economic and Social Survey on In search of new Development Finance. The survey analyzes and evaluates different kind of mechanisms (among them the Financial and Currency Transaction Tax) which could raise more than $400 billion annually for development. UBUNTU STATEMENT RIO+20: A call to responsibility, a call to action

11 May 2012 - IT for Change, with the support of Other News and other organizations, has launched the statement Global Governance of the Internet must be Democratised!, which counts with the endorsement and support of the UBUNTU Forum. The text defends and fosters the great potential of the Internet as an agent in favour of democracy and social change, and states the suitable measures so as to guarantee its democratic and participatory governance, following the guidelines of the World Summit on the Information Society (2003 and 2005). The statement is addressed to the next United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development, which is going to take place in Geneva on 18th May. XIII Conference of UNCTAD

The next 21 to 26 April is celebrated in Doha (Qatar) the XIII Conference of UNCTAD, almost parallel to the celebration of the Spring Meetings of the Bretton Woods Institutions (the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund). The two meetings are surrounded by controversy due to the appointment of the new World Bank's president and the letter signed by former employees of UNCTAD which denounces the boycott which the body is suffering from industrialized countries.

On the road to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro on next June 2012, known as Rio+20 process, a Thematic Social Forum about Capitalist crisis, Social and Environmental Justice is held in Porto Alegre (Brazil). The UBUNTU Forum, present for many years at the World Social Forum and following the Rio+20 process, organizes two self-organized activities and participates in the discussions within the thematic group on Governance and Architecture of Power.
