The 5th CIVICUS World Assembly took place in Gaborone, Botswana at the end of March 2004, introducing the theme ‘Acting Together for a Just World’. Over 700 delegates from 105 countries gathered to discuss the issues of civic, economic, social and political justice in a divided world. The Gaborone meeting also debated some of the specific challenges facing civil society in Africa, particularly HIV/AIDS. Some of the new features of this meeting included an opening ‘dream weave’ to allow participants to share their dreams, a series of ‘night cap’ sessions and the launch of the Nelson Mandela and Graça Machel ‘Innovation Grant’ awards.
